Yukon Summer Music Camp

Sound & Place: Soundscape Composition (Ages 8+, 90 min)

A class you will not find at any other summer music camp! Drawing on his work as a sound artist, field recordist, and creator of graphic-notation and soundscape workshops across Yukon communities from Old Crow to Beaver Creek, Toby opens up an entirely different way of thinking about music. Students will explore creative listening as a musical practice, experiment with field recording and found sound, try their hand at graphic notation (composing with shapes, colours, and symbols instead of traditional notes), and collaboratively compose place-based pieces rooted in the sounds and stories of the Yukon landscape. Open to musicians of any instrument, and equally welcoming to students who don't consider themselves "musicians" at all. If you've ever been curious about what music can do beyond melody and rhythm, or about how contemporary artists are using sound to tell stories about land and memory, this class is for you.

No instrument required, but you are welcome to bring one!
