Yukon Summer Music Camp

Conducting 101

A rare summer camp offering, and one of the most valuable skills any musician can develop. Drawing on his Master of Music in Conducting from the University of Toronto and his work conducting ensembles including the UofT Symphony Orchestra, UofT Wind Ensemble, and the UNT Wind Ensemble at the 2024 Conductors Collegium, Toby opens up the art and craft of conducting for students, music educators, and anyone curious about what happens on the podium. We'll cover beat patterns (2, 3, 4, and 6), cueing entrances and cutoffs, dynamic shaping with gesture, eye contact, score preparation, and the invisible work of communicating with an ensemble without saying a word. Students will take turns conducting short excerpts with their peers playing. This is meant to be a hands-on, supportive, and genuinely transformative experience, whether you're a choir director looking to sharpen your skills, a serious young musician curious about the other side of the stand, or an area music teacher wanting to add conducting to your toolkit. By Friday, you'll understand what a conductor is actually doing up there... and you may just discover you want to try it for yourself!
